Buying Genuine Leather Menu Covers

How do you tell whether your leather menu covers are genuine leather?

1. Touch the leather menu cover. Feel the leather up and down and see if you can differentiate more than one type of substance. Real leather should feel like it has come from as single source and not like a blend of multiple synthetic fibres.
2. Smell the leather menu covers. Leather has a very distinct smell and you should be able to identify it instantly. If you are unsure, go to a shop that sells leather and reintroduce yourself to its aroma.
3. One way to test if leather is full-grain is to lightly scratch its surface with your nail. If it leaves a lighter-colored streak, it's full-grain.
4. Look at the cost. Real leather menu covers should retail in the region of £50 – £100 each, dependent on size. If you are paying considerably less or more then this should be a clear indicator that you may not be purchasing a real leather menu cover.
5. Consider the retailer. If you are shopping on a genuine menu holder website then that is a good indication that the menus you are considering are real leather.
