Leather is one of the most versatile materials on the market and is used across a broad spectrum of products; such as, furniture, shoes, wallets, belts, clothing, chairs, folders, books and leather menu covers. Leather comes from a variety of different sources, for example, cattle and snake skin. What works well on some leathers, in terms of cleaning, does not necessarily work on others.
If you are unsure as to the nature of the leather you have purchased then it would probably be easier to seek a professional leather cleaner. However, as long as you are really careful and gentle, you can softly clean your own leather.
You can purchase general cleaners and conditioners for finished leathers from many supermarkets, hardware stores or department stores. All you need to do is simply clean your leather menu covers gently every 3 months. Spot cleaning, dusting, and the use of protective spray, will also increase the life of your leather menu covers, if carried out carefully using small, moderate amounts of product.
If you do not wish to use bought products, you can make your own recipe for cleaning and conditioning leather. Take 1 part vinegar and add to 2 parts animal reared oil; such as, Neat's-foot oil. Use a white lint free cloth to clean, leave to soak for a few minutes and then buff. All of this must be exercised carefully, with small amounts of cleaning solution.
Of course, all of this is a guideline to cleaning leather. It is really important to know which type of leather you have purchased before embarking on cleaning.
